Jess, you have made your point very strongly and with great conviction. Telling the story of the shift in understanding overtime at the Melbourne Zoo and then putting us in the shoes or paws of the animals really puts us in a space for reflection. I have personally been going to the zoo for half a century and I have seen many well thought out changes that indicate a change in attitude and a respect for the many wonderful and diverse animals in the world. The zoo has become, increasingly a place of science with research and breeding programs replacing circus tricks and display. Did you witness the relationships that the zoo keepers have with the animals. It is a place where families visit but I get the feeling the zoo employees and animals are a bit like a family. Change comes through people like you who think and act.
I remember going to the zoo when I was in Preps and the animals were in the cages as you explained in your 'History' page. I didn't really like that then, but now when I go and see them in open spaces that are designed to be more like their natural habitat, it is much more pleasing! The zoo has so many learning opportunities for all ages. You have reported your findings and observations carefully and thoughtfully. Well done. Mrs Bellesini :)
