LENT IN A BAG : CANDLE

At Monday morning prayer, the Seniors presented us with "Lent in a Bag." Today we explored one of the objects -the candle - and read from Matthew's Gospel 5:14-16 ..."You are the light of the world!"

Thanks Seniors!

 Our Reflections

Declan: Showing other people the way...being the light to other people...being seen as the light like Jesus.

Patrick: We are called to be the light of other people's world. When your friends are in the dark, we are there to light their way. Don't blow out someone's light. It would be like being alone in the dark

Caitlin: The candle means to be a light in the world...make a difference in the world...be the light for someone and make it a more fair and kind world!

Rose: The candle represents Jesus, because jesus is the light of the world. We can light up somebody's world by being Good News and by reaching out in love and mercy!

Hannah A: The light means to show people the way and not to be a bystander. Be the one who helps people...show them the good way, not the bully's way.

Jordi: The candle means to shine your light on one another, to make people happier when they are feeling down. The candle is like Jesus beacuse he is the light of the world. We can also light up other people's world.

Climate justice, Laudato Si, Catholic Social Teaching, Global Goals

As the year draws to a close, the students from Middle Matters have completed their amazing inquiries into Climate Justice.
This brief snapshot of presentation slides gives a glimpse into how they've made the connections between the facts, the Global Goals, Catholic Social Teaching and the papal encyclical, "Laudato Si."
Furthermore, they have raised awareness amd discussed possible actions that can be taken, even as a primary student!

Nature's Close - Ups - our favourite artworks in 2015!

Our inquiry asks, "How are we Called to Care for our Common Home?" As we look at the call of Laudato Si and its implications for sustainability and the stewardship of creation, we take time to look at and paint some of the wondrous things in our world!

SOCKTOBER - Crazy Socks Day!

SOCKTOBER

Today, our school held a fundraiser for Sock-tober to help children in Madagascar, through Catholic Mission. We wore crazy socks to school and brought a gold coin donation to help support this great cause.

The day was a success and everyone was happy!

LAUDATO SI...on Care for our Common Home...a new term begins!

A new term always brings great excitement and anticipation. So it was today when the students walked in to see the new inquiry question...How are we called to care for our common home? The language in our rich question is based on the words of the latest Papal encyclical letter on ecology and climate.

Today we participated in a Silent Word Wall where we reflected on the meaning of four words or phrases: "our common home," "creation,", Stewardship of creation" and "ecology."

CONFIRMATION EVENING FOR PARENTS

On Tuesday evening the Seniors gathered with their parents to present their learning about Confirmation. What I liked was how we were able to share our learning about Catholic Social Teaching and the Gifts of the Spirit and how they connected to our Confirmation.
 Maria
On Tuesday evening we ran lectio divina with our parents. This is a prayerful way of looking at scripture and allows the Spirit to be with us. When people share their thoughts we all feel connected to         the readings.

Tuesday evening was a time for  connecting Confirmation to our inquiry  topic, “Why Justice?” We made the  connections by reflecting on justice issues  around the world and how they challenged  us. The night was an overall success. Both  parents and students were deeply engaged  in the listening and the learning. All the  parents enjoyed seeing the research and  icons of our saints.   Amelia

WHY JUSTICE?

Today we started a new topic of Inquiry. "Why Justice ?" is our new question for our topic inquiring into Social Justice. We used a graphic organiser called a Frayer-Concept Model  so our teacher could see what we already know about Justice. The graphic organiser had questions like, "What does acting justly mean?" and, " What are some non-examples of Justice?" When we finished our graphic organiser  we took sticky notes and wrote some of our answers for display. I think this will be a good topic because it will teach us about how lucky we are compared to some people in other countries and communities.

Please join us in exploring by adding ideas to our question,
What does justice mean to you?"

St Patrick's Day Mass and School Fundraiser

On Tuesday, the SRC went to the annual St Patrick's Day Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral. All the catholic schools in Melbourne came to this Mass. The grade 6 SRC were chosen to hold the banner and process through the cathedral representing our school. After we processed into the church, the Grade 6’s sat under the massive organ. There were TVs all around the church so we could see the Archbishop blessing everyone and then he started the Mass. There were hundreds of children and adults. After the Mass, we toured the cathedral with our teachers. Then we had a celebration in the Exhibition Gardens. Overall we had a fun filled day!

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, everyone donned their green outfits and the Justice Team helped with our annual Green Day Fundraiser for Caritas.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

This morning we joined with women around the world to pray for the women in the Islands of the Bahamas. We pray for them because of the violence they have suffered in their homes. So today we gathered in our church to pray for all those who have been badly treated. The more experienced women in our church told us about what has been happening in the Bahamas. We sang three song together with women from other churches in our area and watched some videos about the Bahamas.
It was good to gather and pray for those less fortunate than ourselves.
We have to be thankful for what we have and know that there are always others that need our help.

PARISH HEALING MASS

Today we went to church for a special healing Mass. It was a moving experience, after Mass, to talk to the parishioners who had received the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.
As well as chatting to them we served them lunch. The Middles provided an amazing choir which the parishioners always really love and appreciate!

WONDER AND AWE - The Gift of Creation

As we work on our sustainability unit, it is a perfect time to consider God's call to be stewards of creation. After watching David Attenborough's beautiful images accompany, Louis Armstrong's, "What a Wonderful World," we discussed the gift of wonder and awe and selected our own favourite images of creation.

Students Lead! Confirmation Information Night for Parents

Teachers and parents alike were incredibly proud of how our Confirmation candidates presented their learning at this year's Parent Information Night for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Conor wrote, "I personally felt that the Confirmation process, ceremony and aftermath was terrific all around. The preparation for Confirmation was well organised and planned out. We practised three times and everyone nailed their part beautifully!
Amber added, "I thought that learning about Confirmation and the saints taught me a lot. The learning was a great experience. I really enjoyed the silk painting of Confirmation symbols because the colours were so bright and the banners really stood out in the Church.
Mairead reflected, "It was amazing how well the prayers of the Faithful were prepared by the students themselves."

CONFIRMATION-ICONS

As we prepared to run our Confirmation parent night, we decided to simply display the research done about our chosen saints, accompanied by an icon that we had created to represent our saint. Using the inspiration of other icons of our saint, we created our own representations!

CONFIRMATION REFLECTION DAY

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

Confirmation from Marg Yore on Vimeo.

The silence....the interest...the stories...the wonders..feelings..knowledge...places...the learning...experiences...

I felt there was  avery different approach to today's learning. I loved listening to the stories of all the trips to Uganda.

I had so many questions and they were answered. We have chosen to bring the Good News!

This day was amazing because it really connected to me, my family and the class. The most amazing part was hearing the story about how the gorilla touched Paul's heart...when he touched his hand. This was an amazing day that really gave us the idea of what we need to know and also how we should be thankful.

The reflection day was such an amazing experience...I could feel what he (Paul) was feeling and all his amazing experiences really touched me. He taught us so much...the great things he had experienced and how to help others.

Today WAS and "awesome" day. It was very different to past experiences. At the Holy Cross Monastery, our presenter, Paul, talked to us about his experiences, working with children in Uganda. He had some symbols from Africa such as a vest made from bark, a giraffe, a nativity scene made form leftovers and a special garment. Also Monsignor Curtin talked to us about the ceremony and the gifts of the Spirit. We discussed social justice because of its strong connection to Confirmation.

I think Paul was very passionate about his work. he was touched by a gorilla coming over to him and holding his hand..then he (the gorilla) shoved him over and sat in his spot eating the vegetation!

RED CROSS FUNDRAISER

RED CROSS ACTION

Today some of our senior girls put into place an action that was inspired by our religious education research into aid organisations. We raised money for Red Cross Australia. To raise the money we drew a chalk cross on the pavement and asked the students to put their coins in the cross. Today we raised a good amount of money and we are still going to continue through out the week. We will let you know how we go!
P.S.  We raised $99.80 and our teacher rounded the amount to $100....thanks and well done everyone.

Dare to Dream in 2013!

"The Good Samaritan" Luke 10:25-37

Amber and Maddie lead us off with the first post for 2013!

Today was our first day back for 2013 and we're rearing to go! We started to learn about the story of the Good Samaritan as that will be our religious focus for this year. Because we attend a "St Lukes" school, our focus always has a Lukan theme.

http://bibleartists.wordpress.com  painting by Van Gogh

We practised "lectio divina" or sacred reading) with our new text. After quietly listening to the story, we selected a word that spoke to us....
Jess chose "pity" because that was the emotion the Samaritan showed to the injured person
Georgia chose "care" because it's always nice to have someone care for you.
Carley chose "neighbour" "because that word makes me feel safe."
Norhan chose "Samaritan" because he was the only one who showed mercy.
Rylee chose "likewise" because we can learn from other people when they do good deeds.

A brief outline of Lectio Divina suitable for younger students.
  • Moment One: Listen –Students are invited to listen to the passage with the ear of the heart and let the words sink in deeply.
  • Moment Two: Reflect –Students are invited to reflect on the passage paying attention to how it speaks to them personally. There may be a word ot phrase that stays with them.
  • Moment Three: Respond – Students are invited to respond through prayer (publicly or privately).
  • Moment Four: Rest –Students are then invited to rest silently in God’s presence.
