Collaborative Groups

THE CHANGE TWO PROCESS IN OUR SCHOOL LED TO COLLABORATION BEING SELECTED AS A MAJOR FOCUS AND INITIATIVE IN OUR SCHOOL. ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS WE DID WAS TO CREATE COLLABORATIVE GROUPS ACROSS THE SEVEN LEVELS AND TO MEET IN THESE GROUPS ON A FORTNIGHTLY BASIS.

I love collaborative groups because it is a great chance get to know others and find out a bit about them and what they like to do...  Tessa

I love collaborative groups because  they are fun and you meet new friends and people and my teacher is good fun.... Molly

I love collaborative groups because we get the opportunity to meet others and get to know them well....Ashling.

and in the way I come to know other students in depth.

CARITAS "JUST LEADERSHIP' DAY

Social Justice is an issue that is important to us and everyone around the world. Today we had a conference provided by Caritas Australia. Megan taught us about equality, generosity, raising consciousness and many other things. We were fortunate to play many games that were tied in with justice. Finally, we had time to plan justice initiatives for our own school.

MAKING OUR OWN MOVIES ABOUT MATHS HELPS US TO LEARN MATHS!

We were learning about decimals, how to multiply and divide them.  We created videos to show others how to perform these operations.  Before filming, we needed to revise the maths, write scripts, prepare our props and rehearse.  It took lots of teamwork and really made us think about the maths and how to clearly explain the process. We noticed some mistakes when re-viewing the movies...does this matter?

REACTIONS TO LEARNING THIS WAY!

Akon: It was a really hands-on way of learning - different and creative.
Amber: We were able to critique the movies and to see for ourselves where we made mistakes.
Simon: Because it was a fun thing to do, I think I will remember it better.
Tristian: It was a creative way to learn, a different way of sharing our maths.
Norhan: There were two purposes to this - having fun and learning Maths as well.
Lizzy: Watching the movies again was useful for revision.
Rylee: It was an easy way to learn from our mistakes...better than lots of teacher talk.

Students Lead! Confirmation Information Night for Parents

Teachers and parents alike were incredibly proud of how our Confirmation candidates presented their learning at this year's Parent Information Night for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Conor wrote, "I personally felt that the Confirmation process, ceremony and aftermath was terrific all around. The preparation for Confirmation was well organised and planned out. We practised three times and everyone nailed their part beautifully!
Amber added, "I thought that learning about Confirmation and the saints taught me a lot. The learning was a great experience. I really enjoyed the silk painting of Confirmation symbols because the colours were so bright and the banners really stood out in the Church.
Mairead reflected, "It was amazing how well the prayers of the Faithful were prepared by the students themselves."

RED CROSS FUNDRAISER

RED CROSS ACTION

Today some of our senior girls put into place an action that was inspired by our religious education research into aid organisations. We raised money for Red Cross Australia. To raise the money we drew a chalk cross on the pavement and asked the students to put their coins in the cross. Today we raised a good amount of money and we are still going to continue through out the week. We will let you know how we go!
P.S.  We raised $99.80 and our teacher rounded the amount to $100....thanks and well done everyone.

SAFER INTERNET DAY

Today's post is from Daniel and Georgia!

Today we watched a safer internet day program. We learnt to use programs with respect when online with the things we do on the internet! We learnt to not use copy right sights for buying music on the internet. For movies. use itunes and google play. Ways in which the internet is misused include cyberbullying, spam, scam, fake profiles, hacking and bad language.

What is our responsibilty? Never share your password, text politely and use privacy settings on instagram and other types of sharing. When you are on an online game show respect, when using websites for homework don't copy directly from the internet. So when you are using the internet, be safe and don't get friends to email their homework to you!!!

HANDS ON MATHS-MAKING MOCKTAILS!

Thanks to a great post on Bearwood blog in the UK (last year), we also experienced the meaning of RATIO in real life by making mocktails in Maths!!! It's great to be able to share ideas across the world!

In the past few weeks we have worked in pairs to learn about a different type of poem. We have researched the Tanka poem.  James and Caitie

What is a Tanka poem?

A Tanka poem is a classic form of Japanese poetry.

It has been used since 1300, the the oldest form of Japanese poetry.

When they wrote them it was often for special occasions.

The Tanka poem has 31 syllables.

After our lesson some of the students wrote a beautiful Tanka.

Jia-Yi wrote:

Cherry blossom trees

Baby pink, white appear

This means spring has come

Adding beautiful texture

To the sunshine coated land

Jessica S wrote:

A radiant beam

Shines across our God's splendors

Vast fields of flowers

A creation of wonder

And a creation of peace

Reflection: We worked well together. Collaborating was fun on this activity. We really enjoyed teaching people about this wonderful type of poem. It was amazing what our class produced from this lesson.

FERMI PROBLEMS

Fermi Problems-Enrico Fermi studied physics and Maths. He liked to pose seemingly impossible questions. “Fermi Problems” celebrate his ability to estimate and play around with problem-solving! NOW...see if you can think like Fermi...help us learn like Fermi by posing a Fermi Problem for our Mathematically crazy class!!! An example we used today was, "How many cans of dog-food do our neighbourhood dogs consume in one night?" Another Fermi Problem I remember is my uncle asking my dairy farmer Dad how many milk shakes his cows could provide in one year!

TAKING ACTION THAT MATTERS

When we began our design inquiry, "Tell Me a Story," we asked for ideas about puppetry from other bloggers. ERutherford suggested we survey our Preps to discover their favourite stories. And that's just what we did...thanks to ERutherford!

This action was about entertaining others and having fun at the same time! (Siobhon)
It was fun creating our own scripts from the stories selected. (Nic)
I was amazed at the Preps incredible feedback Their language was astounding and mature. (Mark)
The Preps were really engaged, so we think our puppets and plays were entertaining! (Gemma)
I learnt new skills such as sewing! (Cameron)
Everybody followed the design process to make their puppets-this process was really helpful. (Siobhon and Corinne)
Because we have collected lots of recycled materials, we have made really creative puppets! (Georgia)
The puppets reflected our individual styles of working. (Mairead)
